As kibbutz Metzer grew and the farming areas and water became scarce, the members of the young kibbutz sought other means of income, some industry that would yield a higher income. In 1970, Kibbutz Metzer bought a plastic profile extrusion and sachet filling line for shampoo, honey and other liquids which evolved into what would eventually become Metzerplas.
Metzerplas extrusion technology went from strength to strength and the factory began producing polyethylene pipes to conduct electric wires within buildings – first ordinary pipes and then, fire-retardant pipes. The technology progressed and Metzerplas began producing pipes that transport water under pressure.
When the Israeli company Lego invented its quality dripper, it sought out a pipe producer able to insert the dripper in its pipe. Thus began the initial cooperation between Lego, a privately owned company, and Metzerplas, a kibbutz company, which would go on to last for over a quarter of a century! Metzerplas developed the technology to insert the drippers into the pipe and commenced its journey into the agricultural market, which included expansion to the planning and designing of full agricultural projects.
Due to production expansion and penetration into new markets both domestically and internationally, Kibbutz Metzer decided to expand its production area and establish a large modern factory. The new advanced plant, built at the entrance of the Kibbutz, enabled Metzerplas to increase significantly its production capacity. The building still serves the company today as its main production factory.
Metzerplas continued its efforts to expand its product basket and add new and advanced technologies and products. It also purchased the patent rights for a pipe made of plastic and aluminum, originally named “Jocer”. Metzerplas was the first factory in the world to commercially produce this type of pipe and helped write the necessary Israeli Standard. Today, the Alu-Pex pipe is considered the premium pipe in home plumbing.
Metzerplas, together with Lego, produced the ADI, a pressure compensated dripper that is highly clog-resistant, even with particle-laden water. The now patented ADI dripper is equipped with filtration areas bigger than those in other similar pressure compensated drippers and it allows for compensation without narrowing the water passage during irrigation.
When the optic fiber infrastructure was introduced to the Israeli market, it quickly became clear that low-friction pipes were required in order to pull optic fibers successfully through long lengths of pipes (kilometers) without using connectors. Metzerplas partnered with Dura-Line USA and received the rights to establish a production line using their Silicore technology. The Metzerplas Silicore production line was one of the first outside of the USA. This new type of pipe changed the infrastructure within Israel and is widely used today in the areas of telecommunication, TV, cables, and more.
The steady growth of sales and the need for rapid supply to the increasing number of overseas customers convinced Metzerplas to begin producing overseas. The first location chosen was Spain. Together with local partners, the company established Agrometzer, a joint venture for dripline manufacturing. Following its success, Metzerplas continued to establish joint production ventures in other key markets.
Metzerplas and Lego were successful partners for 25 years until the Lego’s founding owners sold the company and Lego began focusing on gardening and DIY products. Metzerplas bought the mutual Lego dripper section and began injecting the drippers at the Metzerplas plant and four other injection factories in Israel. Today, Metzerplas produces over two billion drippers annually.

In order to cut transportation expenses and bring Metzerplas technology nearer to the farmers, Metzerplas began building dripline production lines for companies outside Israel. Today, Metzerplas is the only irrigation company that offers a turnkey solution that includes production lines, drippers, agronomic expertise and water conservation know-how. Over 40 sites around the globe have since implemented Metzerplas technology in order to help the local farmers.
Metzerplas acquired a majority stake in Irrigator, a regional Ukrainian distributor and, following the increase of sales, established a joint dripline production facility there. Today, other similar ventures are being established.The first ones due to start production are the plants in China and Mexico. Metzerplas always chooses to produce its driplines in partnership with local partners who can contribute to a better understanding of the specific market.
True to its plan to penetrate new markets with its technology and produce drip laterals there, Metzerplas took the strategic decision to establish a production plant in China. Metzerplas and its Chinese partner, CNYD, set up a joint venture – Shenyang Yuanda Metzerplas Irrigation Industries Co. Ltd.(YDMZ).The agreement between the two companies was signed in October 2015 and the production plant is currently built in Shenyang, North China, with production scheduled to start in late 2016.
