Precision irrigation for young Cherry Orchard

A 30-hectare cherry orchard in Ukraine, planted in spring 2020, was equipped with a multi-year above-ground drip irrigation system using blind tubing and on-line Gali drippers—enabling tree-specific water placement and supporting optimal growth during early orchard development.

CleanLine® features dual protection – an antibacterial additive and a slippery surface – to prevent emitter clogging and prolong system life, especially when using effluent or saline water.

The best irrigation layout for cherries is typically two drip laterals per row, installed evenly on both sides of the tree line (about 20–50 cm from the trunk line). This setup creates a balanced wetting pattern across the root zone and supports uniform uptake. In heavy clay soils, a single lateral on the tree line can be sufficient and more cost-effective.

Irrigation is critical in cherry production because cherries depend on steady, precise moisture to reach top yield and fruit quality – especially since most active roots are concentrated in the upper soil layers. Water demand peaks before harvest, and even short stress at that stage can reduce fruit size. After harvest, irrigation remains essential for tree recovery and for building next season’s yield potential.

Metzer helps cherry growers manage fertigation with precision-focused drip solutions designed to deliver the right nutrients at the right timing and dosage. By supporting pulse irrigation setups with high-quality PC drippers, valves, and automation for irrigation + fertigation control, Metzer enables consistent nutrient distribution, better root-zone management, and more efficient use of water and fertilizer.

Cherries perform best in well-drained, fertile soils – ideally clay loam or sandy clay loam – that hold enough moisture for steady growth while preventing waterlogging. Keeping soil conditions balanced (including the right pH range) helps the roots stay healthy and lets your irrigation and fertigation work at peak efficiency.
